Inuyama : Japan's oldest castle

Inuyama (犬山), lit. “Dog mountain” is one of the big cities of Aichi prefecture. Located just at the border with Gifu prefecture, marked by the picturesque Kiso River, it is at just 30 minutes by train from Nagoya Station.

Through Japan, Inuyama is well known for the traditional cormorant fishing in the Kiso River, unique to the region, and it’s open air museum, allowing you to go back in time, to the Meiji Period (1868-1912). The highlight of the city remains his castle, and his UNESCO world heritage festival.

The castle of Inuyama (1440), located in the north of the Aichi prefecture was considered as the oldest castle in Japan for a long time. It was not destroyed by the war and is so one of the few castles unreconstructed since Edo period (1603-1868). It is also one of the five castles designated as national treasures, with it’s donjon being one of the oldest ones of Japan. Inuyama’s world heritage float festival is hold every year at it feets, usually at the begining of April.
